Photo Story: Serious Animal Love
BY TERESA MATHEW
I love animals, and calling me animal-obsessed is probably putting it mildly. But it’s comforting to know that I’m not alone. When a walk down South Main Street led me to Peaceable Kingdom, and its shop dog Jane Russell, I was thrilled. And then, curious: How many other animals lived in stores in Ann Arbor, and how could I meet them all? Soon, I discovered Lewis the cat from Downtown Home and Garden, Nathaniel the rabbit from Lexi’s Toy Box and Tank the Chihuahua from Red Shoes. All of these shop animals have two things in common: Owners who want to make every day bring-your-pet-to-work day and customers who adore them – Lewis even has an address for his fan mail! So the next time you're walking by one of these stores, don't hesitate to pop in – as long as you remember that the most priceless “items” are not for sale.

Photo Story: Coach & Four and State Street Barbers
BY TODD NEEDLE
I’m from Miami, where barbershops are few and far between. Aside from the occasional dark-stained-floor-hipster-mecca barbershop in the gallery district and downtown, I’d be hard pressed to find a decent barbershop down there. But here in Ann Arbor, I happen to live across the street from two of the most iconic barbershops in town – Coach & Four and State Street Barbers. Nestled among some of the most popular drunk (some may prefer “late night”) food restaurants in town, these two powerhouses have been around since the ’70s. The men who started these Ann Arbor staples so many years ago are still at it today, sweeping up around 30 haircuts worth of clippings at the end of the day. That’s right – 30 haircuts a day. I happened to catch them during the pre-spring break rush – students and Ann Arbor residents hoping to clean up before they head off to the beach or to a job interview next week. I don’t think I’ve ever met such enthusiastic, genial barbers in my life. I can’t remember seeing them without a smile or not chatting up the guys in the chair. But the best part about the barbershops were the stories – four decades worth of happy customers, baby pictures, a Playboy cover and a hell of a lot of hair.
