Scavenging for Sustenance with Sarah Squire: Dec. 7, 2010

BY SARAH SQUIRE

Hi, my name is Sarah Squire and I'm the co-managing design editor at the Daily. I spend many nights at 420 Maynard, beginning at 6 p.m. and going well into the morning. Unlike most staffers I rarely venture outside the building for dinner, instead I scavenge — I observe, plot, ask, beg, and occasionally barter to scrounge together a full meal by the end of the night. This is my latest victory:

I Carved My First Turkey

BY JORDAN KRISTOPIK

Only half of the serving table

I think one of the hardest things for freshmen is leaving home-cooked meals and entering the world of the dining hall and campus food. So when I joined a service-based student group in my first year, I was delighted to hear we would be able to participate in a new-members-only Thanksgiving dinner.

Seed to Stall

BY MADELINE SMITH

Gone are those rustic days when cultivating an apple harvest was as easy as Johnny Appleseed dropping a few seeds in the soil. The Johnny Appleseeds of today employ a few more technical tricks to fill our markets and orchards with this fall fruit.

Easy as...

BY JORDAN KRISTOPIK

Peanut Butter Cup Cookies, cooling in their tin

I think my oven is getting tired. The baking is out of control here in my apartment. It probably doesn't help that my roommate and I bought a 7-pound can of pumpkin puree, that we MUST use before it goes bad. We could freeze it, but that would be too easy. But in the mass of baking, let me tell you about the easy recipes that were big crowd pleasers (AKA bake sale approved).
