A fan-girl's response to Fall Out Boy's new single

BY BRIANNE JOHNSON

Uprising

Well, my favorite skinny-jeaned comeback boys, when you released your new single, "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)" on Monday, along with the announcement of a new album, Save Rock and Roll, and a tour, I did only one thing in the darkness of my bedroom: I cried softly while texting my middle-school best friend. The message read as follows: "FOB TOUR IN MAY PLEASE PLEASE LET'S GO OH MY GAWD."

Angelique Kidjo mesmerizes Hill Auditorium with a set dedicated to the celebration of life

BY ADAM DEPOLLO

Razor & Tie

Few African musicians have as much international influence as Beninese singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo. In her long career as a musician and activist, Kidjo has garnered critical praise for her powerful voice and impressive performances (she is the recipient of five Grammy nominations for Best World Music Record, with one win for her 2007 album Djin Djin), and has received countless awards and commendations for her work as a champion of peace, women’s rights and many other worthy causes. The singer brought her talents to bear in front of a packed house at Hill Auditorium on Friday night.

Beyoncé's Super Bowl halftime show lives up to the hype

BY GIBSON JOHNS

Columbia

From the moment Beyoncé’s silhouette appeared center stage and she belted out the first few lines of “Love On Top” a capella, there was no doubt in my mind that she had come to play. She was about to remind all those haters that she loves so much exactly what she can do. And thus began the best Super Bowl halftime show there's ever been.

Marsalis-led JLCO delivered virtuosic performance at Hill

BY ADAM DEPOLLO

Jazz at Lincoln Center

The comparison of the JLCO to the best symphony orchestras seems to be particularly apt — both perform the repertoire beyond compare, but don’t stray far beyond that repertoire. This being said, however, it seems fair to say that what the Berlin Philharmonic is to classical, Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra are to jazz.

Nelly releases uninspired 'Hey Porsche'

BY RAY MALO

Universal

I’d become certain that Flo Rida’s “Whistle” had reached the pinnacle of shameless double entendre pop rap. But along comes our old friend Nelly to ensure that the wordplay bar stays embarrassingly low.

James Murphy lit up the Crofoot with eclectic set

BY ANDREW ECKHOUS

DFA

James Murphy's underground pedigree was on full burn as he played deep tracks from all sorts of funk, soul, rap, and early electronic records. No huge bass drops, no house beats, just live sampling and a crowd that would’ve been stopped in their tracks had they been able to stop dancing.

'What Ever Happened' to The Strokes?

BY KENDALL RUSS

RCA

“One Way Trigger” is a Strokes song only nominally; the jarring synth and foreign falsetto are about as un-Is This It as it gets. Until Casablancas languidly moans “You ask me to stay” about a minute into the song, you’re not entirely sure if you’re actually listening to The Strokes.
