New video outlines University's budget

BY PETER SHAHIN

It’s not often students see their provost on YouTube. And they’ve definitely never seen him dressed as a chef.

On Tuesday, the University’s Office of Development posted an informational video on Youtube using a cooking metaphor to outline the process of formulating the University’s budget. It has since been placed on CTools and other University websites.

The “Dough Blue” video uses a cooking metaphor to show how tuition, state appropriations and donations come together to fund the University. It also shows how appropriations have declined over time, which has led to a commensurate increase in tuition.

As described in the video, the Athletic Department and the University’s Health System budgets are separate from the general fund and central planning. These units are self-funded.

The University’s Board of Regents will consider next year’s budget and tuition rate changes at their June meeting. No draft budget has been released.
