Weekend Movie Guide: Brace yourself for more 'Twilight' suckage

BY EMILY BOUDREAU

As far as movie releases go, this week is very pathetic. The only big thing is “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1,” which — unless you are willing to brave swarming hoards of tweenage girls who get all googley eyed over vampires and werewolves — probably isn’t all that appealing. That being said, this is the movie where Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) consummate their love and then Bella gets pregnant and her demon baby eats its way out of her body. Sounds promising, right? Oh, and for those who support Team Jacob (Taylor Lautner), this is also the movie where he imprints on Bella’s newborn demon baby. Totally not creepy.

And “Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1” is a kind of box office demon baby as well, seeing as its scared off any other movie (that might actually have substance) from being released on this same date. This means that the only other thing out there is “Happy Feet 2,” an animated movie about dancing penguins. Unless the producers are secretly “Twilight” fans and all the penguins turn into vampires, this will probably be better than the new “Twilight” installment. The movie will feature the voices of worthwhile actors like Brad Pitt (“Moneyball”), Matt Damon (“Contagion”) and Sofia Vergara (TV’s “Modern Family”).

Over at the Michigan, there’s the French film “The Hedgehog,” and no, it is not about a dancing hedgehog. Instead, it’s about a fancy apartment building in Paris and the connections between the people who live there. It’s probably the best thing around this week. The other one that looks promising is the movie “Weekend” which is about the relationship that emerges between two men after a one-night stand — nobody turns into a vampire or anything like that so it’s a safe bet.
