Village Corner reopens on Plymouth Road
BY YOUNJOO SANG
The Village Corner reopened Oct. 8 at a new location on 1747 Plymouth Road after closing its store on South University last November.
Dick Scheer, the owner of the Village Corner, said it was a long search to find a new location, mostly due to problems regarding approval for a liquor license.
“Beer and wine license is not a problem, but liquor license is restricted by population and location,” Scheer said. “You have to be over half a mile away from the nearest store that has a liquor license.”
However, this restriction is waived if the store is across a four-lane road. Using the exception clause, Scheer moved his business to its new location.
He added the new location has not seen a lot of student traffic yet, but expects that will change as he slowly adds stock, like beer and tobacco, each week.
While the store will no longer be a supermarket, it will still sell candies, cookies and various non-grocery products, Sheer said.
Although the new location is much smaller and further away from Central Campus, he said he is still optimistic as “the Courtyard restaurants are quite popular” in spite of its North Campus location.
“Right now we’re learning how the new community works and will respond accordingly,” he said.
LSA senior Collin Peterson said that he had not heard about the relocation of Village Corner, but he thinks Plymouth road is not as good of a location as former space on South University and may be inconvenient for customers.
“It got a lot of business because it was so near campus,” Peterson said. “I used to go there all the time because it was very convenient.”
Engineering junior Graham Billey described The Village Corner as “awesome”, and reminisced that it used to be the closest place to buy liquor on Central Campus.
He added he thinks the new location is a little far for students on Central Campus, especially those who do not have a car.
