Occupy Wall Street goes Disney
BY ARIELLE SPECINER
Many celebrities are taking a stand on Occupy Wall Street. Susan Sarandon protested, Russell Simmons handed out water bottles and Alec Baldwin supports the cause. And now one of our favorite teen-pop starlets is taking a stand on it too: Miley Cyrus.
The former “Hannah Montana” star and current marijuana spokesgirl (she recently stated, “You know you're a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake. You know you smoke way too much fuckin’ weed.”) is in support of the OWS cause — she even wrote a song about it.
“It’s a Liberty Walk” is “dedicated to the thousands of people who are standing up for what they believe in.” Cyrus teamed up with Rock Mafia to produce an electro-pop track featuring her new talent, rapping. Aren’t we lucky?
The video that accompanies the song does a good job of presenting the power of the protest, but who can take it seriously with Miley’s auto-tuned whining in the background with the chorus, “It’s a liberty walk saying goodbye to people who tied you up. It’s a liberty walk, feeling your heart again, breathe in new oxygen?”
While the Disney darling presents her song with good intentions, all I have to say is — really?! I’m much more inclined to dance to this beat than march to it. I can’t imagine how deep her roots to the cause are — her estimated net worth is $120 million. Even one of the leaders of the Occupy Wall Street Journal doesn’t believe in Miley’s true intentions and “double dog dared” her to actually protest. Cyrus is probably one of the last celebrities I could see riding the support train for Occupy Wall Street. Doesn’t she have better things to do, like stage a paparazzi shoot?
So whether she really cares about the protest or she’s just trying to be trendy, all I can really say is, she’s just being Miley!
