My Ann Arbor: Midnight at the Movies

BY ELIANA FENYES

There’s no cure for a broken heart like a night at the movies, and no one does a night at the movies better than Ann Arbor. Year round, when the clock strikes midnight, the State Theater dusts off cult classics like “The Goonies,” “The Evil Dead” and “Anchorman” and opens its doors to an anxiously awaiting public ready to laugh, cry, or scream to the tune of their favorite films.

If you’re looking for a quiet night at the movies, midnights may not be your cup of tea — instead, look forward to a rollicking crowd that will heartily repeat all the important lines along with the characters on screen, and maybe even all the swellings of the theme song.

And the best part? Besides the part where Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate kiss in front of the bear pen and you and your compatriots burst into tears and applause? Midnight movies only cost $6. So pile guilt-free into those velvety seats in the State Theater for upcoming shows like “The Terminator/Terminator 2” (Feb. 11), “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” (Feb. 25), and “Ghostbusters” (April 21), and check the State Theater’s website for more midnight showings. But you might want to brush up on some memorable quotes, first.
