MSA mandates captions for hearing impaired
BY ROBIN VEECK
In order to increase campus accessibility for the deaf and hard-of-hearing, all films, movies, and video clips shown at events sponsored by the Michigan Student Assembly will now be required to have captions.
The resolution implementing this requirement — co-written by LSA rep. Allison Horky, chair of MSA’s Disability Affairs commission, and LSA rep. Felix Lopez — was passed unanimously at tonight’s MSA Meeting. The resolution states that the new rules for captioning will help MSA comply with the University’s Non-Discrimination Statement and bring MSA in line with the American with Disabilities Act’s Suggestions.
Student organizations funded by MSA who fail to caption movies or video clips may be penalized in MSA’s next funding cycle.
The Services for Students with Disabilities Office already offers a free service where it captions movies for students and student organizations.
