Greek houses form teams for Greek Week
BY LIANA ROSENBLOOM
After an evening of fundraising at Rick’s American Café, sororities and fraternities from all four Greek Life councils formed teams for the “Made in the USA” 2012 Greek Week charity event, which will take place March 19-28.
The pairings, listed below, were decided based on the percentage of each chapter's membership that attended last night’s event. The teams will compete throughout Greek Week to raise money for national and local charities, such as Mott’s Children’s Hospital, Make-A-Wish Foundation and Friendship Circle.
The non-profit event began at the University in 1978 and works to raise money by uniting Greek Life members, the University and the Ann Arbor community in a week of events and competitions, according to the Greek Week web site.
The event is also intended to encourage collaboration between the University and local organizations.
Ryan Gross, vice president of public relations for the Interfraternity Council, said the pairings process is one of the first steps in preparation for the event.
“It is pretty early (in the process) but it’s very exciting,” Gross said. “And it’s going to get more busy starting from today.”
Adam Davis, co-director of this year's Greek Week, wrote in an e-mail that last night’s even was very successful and he is confident the rest of the planning will be as well.
“The event had great attendance and kicked off Greek Week in a positive and exciting manner,” Davis wrote. “This year's steering committee is comprised of motivated and hard-working campus leaders that will put on an excellent Greek Week.”
Davis added that he thinks the Greek community has a lot of potential to make a difference in the community.
“When the Greek Community comes together and utilizes its vibrant and competitive nature, great philanthropic feats are always accomplished while simultaneously having a great time,” Davis wrote.
