Gibson will not enroll at Michigan for fall semester

Just one month before the drop of the first puck for fall practice, the Michigan hockey team has lost the brightest piece of its future.
Soon-to-be-freshman goaltender John Gibson was a second-round draftee of the Anaheim Ducks in late June, and Michigan coach Red Berenson announced Wednesday that Gibson has gone another route.
"John Gibson has decided not to attend the University of Michigan or to play college hockey,” Berenson said in a press release.
With the 6-foot-3 goaltender opting for likely the Ontario Hockey League, Michigan is left with a pair of walk-ons between the pipes. But that won't faze Berenson. One of those is senior goaltender Shawn Hunwick, who led Michigan to the Frozen Four in 2010-11.
Behind Hunwick is sophomore goaltender Adam Janecyk, who saw just a few minutes of action during his freshman campaign.
The Wolverines lost goaltender Jack Campbell in a fairly similar way before the 2010-11 season. Campbell committed to play for Michigan, then after a first-round selection in the NHL Entry Draft he left for the OHL. But Campbell de-committed in November of the year before, not July.
