Punter Will Hagerup reinstated, to miss 2013 season

BY GREG GARNO

The reigning Big Ten punter of the year, senior Will Hagerup, will sit out the Michigan football team’s 2013 season according to the athletic department on Tuesday.

But things could be worse.

Hagerup was reinstated to the team and is able to participate in voluntary summer workouts and team functions for the 2013 season. He will not be able to play until 2014, which marks his final season of eligibility.

“Getting back around his teammates is an important step in this process,” said Michigan coach Brady Hoke in a statement through the athletic department. “Will and I have had several discussions over the past five months, none of which have been about football. Our primary concern has been for him, as a person, and that will not change.

“Will is a part of our family, and we will continue to offer the resources to help him learn and grow. I am pleased with his progress to this point, and he knows that must continue every day moving forward.”

Hagerup was suspended for a violation of team in rules in December and missed the Outback Bowl as a result. It marks the third time in his four years that he has been suspended.

In 2010 as a freshman, Hagerup was suspended for the Ohio State game. The following year as a sophomore, he was suspended for the first four games of the season.

“I understand my actions represent every person that supports me, as well as any man who has worn a Michigan jersey the past 133 years,” Hagerup said in a statement. “My dad always says that ‘character is how you act when no one is watching.’ In retrospect, I needed to take a big step in the character department, and I'm excited in the progress I've made in the last five months.”

Last season, Hagerup had a 45-yard average — the highest in his three seasons. He also punted for a career-best 353 yards against Alabama.

Junior Matt Wile is expected to take over punting duties after he stepped in for Hagerup during the Outback Bowl. Wile, who is also responsible for kickoffs and long field goals, could face a challenge from walk-on Kenny Allen.

“I want to thank coach Hoke, Dave Brandon, Greg Harden and all of my teammates who have supported me and always made time for me in their busy schedules, even when it looked like I may not ever play here again,” Hagerup said. “They have given me a new opportunity to become the Michigan Man I always wanted to be, and I plan on taking advantage of that second chance. That said, I realize everyone needs to see my actions, not simply hear about them.”
