Film Screening Alert: 'Miss Representation' talks about contemporary women's issues
BY DAVID TAO
Feminism is a movement more closely associated with the past. Images of Susan B Anthony and her fellow suffragettes spring to mind, as do ’40s propaganda symbols such as Rosie the Riveter. Today however, the struggle continues, as shown in “Miss Representation,” a documentary from first-time writer/director Jennifer Siebel Newsom that analyzes media’s message to today’s female youth.
Newsom makes the argument that a woman’s sexuality is still emphasized over her ability to lead and supports her premise with interviews from a diverse set of powerful women, ranging from Dr. Condoleeza Rice to Rachel Maddow. It's a convincing case.
The film is showing tonight in 1300 Chem at 8:30 p.m.
