Emergency personnel respond to smell of smoke on State Street

BY AUSTEN HUFFORD

About four fire trucks, several Ann Arbor police cars and about three Huron Valley ambulances responded to the smell of smoke at the intersection of State Street and East Liberty Street, near the State Theater, at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday.

Emergency personnel immediately shut down the intersection to traffic. A firefighter on scene only initially said that AAFD was investigating in response to a 911 call.

Firefighters entered the Chipotle restaurant next to the theater, but quickly exited the building and proceeded to use a ladder to climb onto the roof. Patrons remained in Chipotle throughout the incident, and a small crowd gathered across the street to watch.

After about 15 minutes, all emergency personnel vacated the area and reopened the street.

Ann Arbor Battalion Chief Robert Vogel said in a later interview that restaurant staff were just “cleaning their grill.”
