CCHA second-round matchups set, Michigan to face Bowling Green
BY STEPHEN J. NESBITT
While the No. 5 Michigan hockey team had a first-round bye in the CCHA Tournament this weekend, a double-overtime shocker in Marquette had a major impact on the Wolverines.
Last-place Bowling Green traveled to face Northern Michigan, and after receiving a 6-3 drubbing on Friday, the Falcons charged back with a pair of consecutive victories, including a 2-1 double-overtime win late on Sunday night.
Because Michigan took the CCHA regular-season title, it secured a second-round matchup with the lowest-ranked remaining team: Bowling Green.
Michigan played a pair of games against the Falcons in October—the opening weekend of CCHA action—and swept them with 4-1 and 4-2 victories. Bowling Green entered the first round of the conference tournament with a 3-21-4-2 CCHA record.
The Wolverines will host the Falcons in a three-game series at Yost Ice Arena next weekend.
In other news around the conference, both top seeds — Alaska and Lake Superior State — won their respective series in two-game sweeps. The Nanooks took down Michigan State in Fairbanks, and the Lakers downed Ohio State in Sault. Ste Marie.
CCHA Tournament second round (Mar. 11-13):
1 Michigan vs. 11 Bowling Green
2 Notre Dame vs. 8 Lake Superior State
3 Miami (Ohio) vs. 7 Alaska
4 Western Michigan vs. 5 Ferris State
