Armstrong speaks out for students in final meeting as MSA president

BY ROBIN VEECK

At his final meeting as Michigan Student Assembly president last night, Chris Armstrong said he only has one thing to say to critics of the assembly.

“Go to hell. MSA can do amazing things,” Armstrong said.

In a speech he read at last night’s meeting, Armstrong urged future assembly members to value student concerns before anything else.

“I think we can admit sometimes this assembly falters at what it’s supposed to do,” Armstrong said. “It's at these moments that we let our personal egos get in the way of what's best for this assembly and the students it represents.”

Armstrong added that he thinks MSA has the ability to do great things. He listed some of MSA’s accomplishments during his term over the past year, including the work of the Open Housing Initiative to instate gender neutral housing in residence halls and the assembly’s work to bring Lupe Fiasco to campus for a benefit concert. Armstrong also spoke about the creation of a new MSA website and the restructuring of MSA’s constitution.

The terms of MSA’s current representatives and executives will expire next week. At the next MSA meeting, MForward’s DeAndree Watson and Brendan Campbell will be taking over as MSA president and vice president.

Members of the assembly also discussed and passed eight resolutions at last night’s meeting. Five of the resolutions amended the assembly’s internal proceedings through revisions to MSA’s compiled code and standing rules. Two others delegated additional funds to MSA’s Environmental Issues Commission and Disability Affairs Commission from the assembly’s discretionary account.

MSA also passed a resolution supporting the creation of an LGBT health studies course at the School of Public Health.
