University Police officers will be on hand at the Shapiro Undergraduate and Hatcher Graduate Libraries this week to assist students, faculty and staff in registering their laptops and other electronic devices for the department's loss prevention program.
From Tuesday through Thursday, officers will be at the libraries from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. to promote and administer registration in the program. Those who can't make it to the library can also register online.
The program allows individuals to register their laptops or other devices with a University Police database, which officers will check when they find lost or stolen laptops. The system allows officers to more easily make contact with a device's owner when a laptop is found.
About one to two weeks after registering online, participants in the program receive two stickers for the laptop that deter theft and help officers identify the owner. However, participants who register in-person will receive their stickers immediately.
The program was expanded to bicycles — another hot item for thieves — in October.
