Episode Review: 'HIMYM' disappoints with complacent writing in 'Twelve Horny Women'

One can only hope season eight doesn’t end up being “How I Met Your Mother” ’s last. As the very-nearly Second Coming of “Friends,” a new episode of “HIMYM” is like donning a beloved pair of red cowboy boots.

It’s the writing, however, that seems to be taking a slip in the new season. “HIMYM” might be a bit too complacent in its legen — wait for it — dary (sorry, I had to) status, as the deft, on-the-spot hilarity is conspicuously absent.

“Twelve Horny Women” concludes Joe Manganiello’s two-part guest appearance, back to reprise his role as Marshall’s brunch bro. Manganiello is excellent, and the copious amount of on-screen time without his shirt cleverly plays on his “True Blood” roots.

The group also debates who was the most badass teenager, a scene in which two high points of the episode come into play: A Robin Sparkles sighting and an excellent “The Wire” reference.

But where “HIMYM” used to inspire non-stop smiles, viewers have to dig to get any payoff here. At least we know Marshall will do those judicial robes … justice.
