India may seem like an exotic break destination for some, but for me it has never signified an actual vacation. Trips to India are a whirlwind of visits to every branch of the family tree, trying not to get my myriad relatives confused and attending every function under the sun. In Kerala during December that means mainly means weddings. These are simple Malayali Syrian Catholic weddings — not the elaborate kind Bollywood has charmed the west into believing all Indians have. So my break mainly consisted of three weddings and a baptism; exhausting, rewarding, and delicious. Also, if Bollywood wants to make a Hugh Grant knockoff, I now have the perfect material.
