Senior Denise Muresan has continued her tremendous play after her semifinal run last weekend at the ITA All-American Tournament in California by making it to the finals of the USTA/ITA Midwest Championships this weekend.

Along the way to the finals, Muresan, the twelfth-ranked player in the nation, defeated players from Notre Dame and Northwestern, as well as fellow Wolverine, sophomore Mimi Nguyen, to set up a clash between the tournament's top two players on Tuesday in Ann Arbor.

The rest of the Michigan women’s tennis team had a strong showing over the weekend. Freshman Brooke Bolender and Nguyen both advanced to the quarterfinals of singles play.

Nguyen grinded out two tough three-set matches, first topping her teammate, senior Rika Tatsuno, in the second round, and then winning in a third-set tiebreak over Chrissie McGaffigan of Notre Dame.

Nguyen's run ended against No. 6 Maria Mosolova of Northwestern.

Bolender won three straight-set matches including a big win against No. 73 Zara Harutyunyan of Akron, to set up a quarterfinal matchup against Muresan.

The match was characterized by long baseline rallies and fierce play by both Wolverines. The freshman got off to the better start and took the first set, 6-1, but eventually Muresan’s big-match experience and consistency came through as she took the next two sets for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win. It was the only set Muresan lost all weekend.

The singles final will pin the tournament's top two seeds against each other with Muresan taking on the No.1 seed, Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame, at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Muresan also won three doubles matches to reach the quarterfinals with fellow senior Kari Wig before losing to Illinois in a tiebreak, 9-8 (3).
