The official unveiling of the University of Michigan Soccer Stadium didn’t happen without a few minor kinks — no internet in the press box, problems with pre-game music, and the Michigan women’s soccer team’s one-goal deficit heading into halftime against University of Detroit last night.

But after coach Greg Ryan’s switch to a more aggressive 3-4-3 attack following the intermission, the Wolverines rallied for three unanswered goals in a 3-1 victory.

“It was a great way to open the stadium, great atmosphere tonight and Michigan has built us a beautiful home,” Ryan said.

Just over 12 minutes into the contest, Titan sophomore midfielder Sarah Dzuris released a corner kick into the box, where a wide-open Nina Carter redirected the ball into the net — the goal was UDM’s first shot on the Wolverines.

Ryan attributed the team’s one-goal margin to some of his freshmen being “tentative” in attacking the Titans, which as he said, is certainly “understandable for their first game on the big stage.”

Additionally, UDM focused on a more “defensive posture,” according to the three-year coach, and with a more defensive style of play, made it extremely difficult for the Wolverines to push the ball through the Titan defenders.

After instructing his players to execute “an even more offensive system,” Michigan brought the play to UDM in a very one-sided second half.

The Wolverines allowed zero shots in the final 45 minutes, making life for redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer relatively easy.

Ryan also commented on how a few of his freshmen are being called upon to take “scoring roles” as underclassmen, saying he was very pleased some had done just that against UDM in the team’s first regular season game.

“I’m just really happy because this is how the freshman mature. Tori McCombs knows now she’s not just a player, she’s a game-winner,” he said of the true freshman who registered the first two goals on the night.

When asked what it felt like to not only register the first, but also the second goal at the new soccer complex, McCombs responded with, “Absolutely amazing.”

The other goal, unsurprisingly, came off the foot of another freshman, Nkem Ezurike. Ezurike sealed the victory with just a few minutes left on the clock, with Ryan describing the Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia native as “a handful up top” for UDM. Ezurike’s up-tempo play drew one yellow card from a UDM player along with a couple shoves to the ground for her quick feet.

And while it’s just one game into the season, the future for Michigan is fairly optimistic with a brand new stadium and a host of talented up-and-coming freshmen.

“This is one of the top three or four college soccer stadiums in the country … To be able to come out and win our first game on our home field was very special for the girls and a great start to 2010,” Ryan said.
