It was a bittersweet 3-0 win over Indiana on Saturday night as the Wolverines recognized their seniors in their last home game as Michigan volleyball players.

Senior setter Lexi Zimmerman, senior defensive specialist Maggie Busch and student assistant Jackie Nissen headed into the Wolverines' weekend series with a 98-37 overall record, and were recognized for their contributions to Michigan volleyball (12-6 Big Ten, 23-7 overall) over the past four years.

With the wins this weekend against conference opponents Purdue and Indiana, Zimmerman has started in 137 consecutive matches. She is a two-time AVCA All-American and was named to the All-Big Ten first team in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. She was the first volleyball player to be selected as the Michigan Female Athlete of the Year, and she has recorded 5,704 assists, 1,291 digs, 625 kills and 105 service aces so far in her career.

“I don't think you replace a player like Lexi,” Michigan coach Mark Rosen said. “Lexi is one of those great players that doesn't come around all the time.”

Zimmerman played spectacularly in the 3-1 win over Purdue (9-8, 18-10) and the 3-0 sweep of Indiana (7-11, 19-11), registering nine kills, 97 assists and 19 digs on the weekend.

“She is a great setter, but an even better friend and a great teammate, and I am really going to miss her a lot,” junior outside hitter Alex Hunt said.

Busch has played in 115 matches while at Michigan. This season alone she has reached 212 digs and 25 aces. Throughout her time at Michigan, she has recorded 287 digs and 65 service aces. This weekend, Busch had fourteen digs, two total attacks and a service ace.

“I'll miss the whole environment,” Busch said. “There is nothing like playing at home. The crowd is there, and your parents are there, your friends are there. The fans are awesome.

“It's just such a great environment to play in and obviously my teammates are what I'll miss the most. They are great girls, and I think that is going to be the hardest part about leaving.”

Jackie Nissen received a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA before becoming a student assistant for the team. She appeared in 10 matches while playing for Michigan and tallied 17 kills.

With their last home game at Cliff Keen Arena behind them, the Michigan seniors still have two more regular-season games before the NCAA Tournament.

“Coach always says that the best teams in the country play their best volleyball at the end of the year, so right now we are just trying to get peak performance out of everyone individually and collectively as a team,” Zimmerman said. “So that's our goal day in and day out, and that's what we keep striving for.”
