Senior midfielder Carron approaches milestone

After the Michigan women's soccer team's first Big Ten win against Purdue on Thursday in Ann Arbor, senior midfielder Jackie Carron has her own milestone to look forward to: her 70th career start as a Wolverine. The next game against Indiana on Saturday will put Carron among an elite list of 16 Wolverines who have reached such a feat.

Until recently, Carron was not aware of how close she was to the milestone, but it comes as no surprise that she has recorded that many starts.

"After I began to start consistently my freshman year I knew that I could come close to this record," Carron said.

Looking ahead to the next game, Carron says she’s expecting the team to play with the same offensive push that resulted in its come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Boilermakers.

The tying goal came 56 seconds into the second half. Carron said it’s much easier to focus on playing when the tying goal comes so early; the team can relax and play without the pressure of being down one.

Perhaps watching Carron will give young players like freshmen Nkem Ezurike and Meghan Toohey something to aspire to.

As a starting freshman, Ezurike is already making a name for herself in the Big Ten. Before Thursday's game she was tied for fifth place in the conference with six goals and also tied for 10th in points with 13.

Toohey, who is also starting as a freshman, assisted in both goals tonight. Toohey assisted with a long throw into the box for the first goal and executed a breakout pass to junior Clare Stachel for the second.
