Following the No. 10 Michigan hockey team’s 7-2 shellacking of Lake Superior State on Friday night at Yost Ice Arena, the Wolverines were hoping to secure their first conference sweep since early in October against Bowling Green.

With Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Lakers, Michigan did just that.
The Wolverines got on the board first at the 14:28 mark of the opening period as sophomore forward Kevin Lynch fired a wrister from the left end boards that beat Lake Superior netminder Kevin Kapalka — the goal was Lynch’s fifth of the season.
But Michigan (7-2-1-0 CCHA, 8-3-3 overall) couldn’t hold the lead for long as Laker forward Matt Cowie found the back of the net just under three minutes later. Cowie cut across the Wolverines’ blue line and weaved his way through the Michigan defense to tie up the score.
Coming out of the locker room, the Wolverines kept the scoring going as junior defenseman Brandon Burlon picked up a loose puck in the Laker zone and fired a blistering slap shot that beat Kapalka high glove side.
A few minutes later, Lynch got his second goal of the night midway through the period to put Michigan up, 3-1. Senior forward Louie Caporusso threw a wrister on net, with Lynch burying the huge rebound past Kapalka.
The two-goal lead didn’t last for long though as the Lakers (3-6-1-0, 5-7-2) responded 17 seconds later.
And that’s how the score would remain as both teams traded isolated chances in the third period of play, with Michigan senior netminder Bryan Hogan making 11 saves in the final frame to preserve the lead. Hogan is 6-1-0 on the year.
The Wolverines return to the ice next weekend in the 18th Annual College Hockey Showcase. Michigan will square off at Wisconsin on Friday night and Minnesota on Sunday afternoon.
