EAST LANSING -- The Spartans extended their win streak against Michigan to three tonight with a 3-2 victory over the Wolverines at Munn Ice Arena.

The game was even throughout the first half of the opening period but all changed after Michigan freshman Kevin Lynch took a cross-checking penalty.

The Spartans set up their power play and launched five consecutive shots at junior goalie Bryan Hogan. Hogan stopped the first four, with a majority of those coming while he was laying flat on his back, but he couldn’t stop the fifth as Spartan forward Corey Tropp stuffed it into the net.

After escaping the first period down just a goal, Michigan was outplayed for much of the second period. With about three minutes left in the second, Michigan's freshman defensemen Lee Moffie took the puck deep into the offensive zone. No one covered for Moffie and after the puck was turned over, the Spartans broke in on a 2-on-1. After a cross-ice pass, Michigan State’s Andrew Rowe put a wrist shot past Hogan.

But Michigan fought back, literally. A scuffle emerged between freshman A.J. Treais and Michigan State’s Matt Grassi. By the time the penalties were figured out Michigan had a five-on-three power play.

Junior Carl Hagelin added to his team lead in goals by converting on a backdoor chance with the man advantage. Junior Louie Caporusso followed Hagelin’s lead approximately five minutes later with a power play goal of his own.

Seconds after the Caporusso goal, Michigan State drove toward Hogan and it appeared they had scored again to make the game 4-2. But the referees conferred and determined that Spartan Andrew Rowe interfered with Hogan, negating the goal.

Hogan was pulled with about a 1:20 left but the Wolverines couldn’t convert with the extra attacker losing their third game this season to the Spartans after sweeping the five game season series last year. The two will square off tomorrow night in Joel Louis Arena for their final meeting in the regular season.
