Michigan clinches bye in Big Ten Tournament, beats Penn State

In the Michigan baseball team's 7-4 victory over Penn State on Saturday, the Wolverines accomplished two feats: the win solidified second place in the Big Ten and Michigan received the coveted bye in the first round of the conference tournament as well.

The Wolverines (14-10 Big Ten, 34-20 overall) got started early in the first inning when redshirt junior Anthony Toth banged a triple to bring in one run and set himself up to score from third after junior leftfielder Ryan LaMarre's pop-fly to center.

The Nittany Lions (9-15, 22-30) responded by tallying three runs of their own in the bottom of the third frame.

Michigan coach Rich Maloney didn’t hesitate at all to pull starting pitcher Brandon Sinnery from the mound after allowing seven hits in just one inning.

Maloney called junior pitcher Matt Miller to the rubber. Miller has given up the most hits out of the entire Wolverine bullpen, 76 to date.

But today proved to be a different day for Miller. He pitched seven-plus innings and struck out six while allowing no runs scored and just one hit — arguably his best performance all season.

The Wolverines finally pulled ahead in the seventh inning after LaMarre hit a single into centerfield and drove in two runners. And then senior catcher Chris Berset hit a single to left field, which brought in LaMarre and Toth.

Berset’s two RBI put Michigan up 7-4 and effectively clinched second place in the Big Ten by pulling ahead of Iowa in conference standings.
