BOWLING GREEN — After a 4-1 victory Friday night against Bowling Green, the No. 4 Michigan hockey team took the ice Saturday night looking for its first CCHA series sweep of the season and win for senior goalie Bryan Hogan.

After racking up 46 penalty minutes on the night, the Wolverines' penalty kill labored to secured a win — and the sweep — over Bowling Green by a final score of 4-2.

Michigan (2-0-0 CCHA, 2-0-1 overall) was able to stay out of the penalty box for the first 19 minutes of the first period, giving its offense an opportunity to pressure Bowling Green sophomore netminder Andrew Hammond. The Wolverines dominated the early parts of the first period and got on the board at 10:49 when junior left wing David Wohlberg found the net for his second goal of the season.

The Wolverines tallied their second goal on the one-man advantage when freshman defender Jon Merrill put the shot from Wohlberg and senior center Louie Caporusso in the back of Hammond’s net.

Senior center Matt Rust left the game with 5:53 remaining in the first with an unknown injury. After Rust’s departure, Berenson switched up the lines and with 2:34 remaining in the first, junior defender Brandon Burlon put the Wolverines up 3-0 with his first goal of the season.

With one minute remaining in the period, junior right wing Luke Glendening was tagged for hooking and just thirty seconds into his time in the box, the Falcons finally capitalized on their power play to get on the board after some chaos in front of Hogan.

But five minutes into the second period, senior center Louie Caporusso scored a shorthanded goal to give Michigan back its three-goal advantage. Senior left wing Carl Hagelin beat a three-on-one to feed Caporusso for the assist.

Bowling Green wasn’t finished yet, as the Falcons capitalized yet again with nine minutes remaining in the second when Hogan gave up a rebound to cut the Wolverine lead in half.

While Michigan’s penalty kill was strong all weekend, the Wolverines can’t continue to keep taking so many penalties each game. Senior left wing Scooter Vaughn — who spent the majority of the night playing with Hagelin and Brown in Rust’s absence — was tossed with two minutes left in the second for checking from behind and game misconduct. In the third, freshman defenseman Mac Bennett was tabbed with the same penalty and ejected from the game.
