The 2nd-seeded Michigan field hockey team executed a defensive masterpiece as they kicked off their postseason yesterday, shutting out Iowa by a score of 2-0 in the first game of the Big Ten tournament.

The Wolverines made junior goalkeeper, Christi Barwick’s job easy, denying the Hawkeyes a single shot throughout the entire contest. Michigan controlled the pace of the game from the start to the very end and amassed 13 total shots.

Michigan may have dominated most of the game, but the scoreboard read zeros at halftime. Early in the second half, junior Bryn Bain put an end to that with a blistering shot from the center of the field. Then with 10 minutes remaining, senior Alicia Mayer punched the Wolverines' ticket to the next round by batting in a rebound off the post.

Michigan plays No. 8 Penn State at 2 p.m. CT today in Evanston. The Wolverines bested the Nittany Lions in their previous matchup back on Sept. 26, 2-0. The victor will then square off against the winner of Michigan State-Ohio State on Sunday in the Big Ten Championship.
