If an invitational team trophy was sufficient proof of excellent putting, then the Michigan women’s golf team’s fifth-place finish demonstrated a solid effort on the greens.

But some players would be hard-pressed to say that their putting this weekend was where it needs to be.
Just ask senior Min Yean Tan, who entered her round on Sunday as the individual leader, only to relinquish it with a final-round score of 78 — a performance that was bogged down by a streak a three straight bogeys and 35 putts. Afterward, Tan was not exactly thrilled about her putting performance.
“My bad putting was all mental," Tan said. "I was just too timid with the greens. The greens were a little bit quicker today, but I have been playing for a long time. I should be able to adjust.”
But the senior was not alone in her putting frustrations. Junior Megan Bauer also had a rough time around the greens, shooting a final-round 76 and a 54-hole total of 231. Bauer’s scores did progress throughout the weekend, but she was not satisfied with her putting, especially during her final-round.
“Sunday was an interesting round," Bauer said. "I did not putt very well and I could hit some greens but when you don’t sink putts it doesn’t turn out as well as you hoped.
“We have tough greens, and they just didn’t fall," Bauer said. "It wasn’t my day, but it happens, unfortunately. It was hard to get the up and downs as easily as we had wished.”
Bauer, Tan and the rest of Michigan’s golf team will look to respond in two weeks in East Lansing for the Mary Fossum Invitational. The Wolverines will have some time before then to sharpen their skills. But in Bauer’s eyes, only one aspect of the team’s game was in blatant need of attention.
“We were really struggling with our short games," Bauer said. "We have to practice a lot.”
