It's no surprise that junior outside hitter Alex Hunt recorded 20 or more kills in both Friday and Saturday’s victories: she had done it 10 times already this season. However, on Saturday against Indiana she became just the second player in the Big Ten to do so in three sets this season.

Coming off its first losing weekend of the season, the No. 20 Michigan volleyball team (12-6 Big Ten, 23-7 overall) rebounded against Purdue and Indiana due in large part to Hunt's 11th and 12th 20-kill matches this season.
On Friday night Michigan proved it was more than just a one-trick pony against Purdue (9-8 Big Ten, 18-10). With four players recording double-digit kills, including Hunt with 21 and fellow junior middle blocker Courtney Fletcher with 10, the Wolverines beat the Boilermakers in four sets.
In Saturday night's sweep of the Hoosiers (7-11, 19-11), Michigan's last home game of the season, it was senior setter Lexi Zimmerman assisting Hunt time and time again, a fitting way to end the Wolverines' season at Cliff Keen Arena considering the two's constant collaboration throughout this season.
Hunt bagged 20 kills and accounted for 18 Zimmerman assists. Michigan State Spartan Jenilee Rathje is the only other player to accomplish that feat this season. Zimmerman, a two-time AVCA All-American, assisted on 23 more kills tallying a double-double with 41 assists and 10 digs.
“I don’t think you replace a player like Lexi Zimmerman,” Michigan coach Mark Rosen said after the Senior Night victory. “Lexi’s one of those very special players that doesn’t come around all the time … she’s special and that’s what makes someone an elite player who will be a three or four time all American. You don’t really look to replace that, you look to retool and redesign what you do.”
Hunt's and Zimmerman’s solid performances combined with strong Michigan defense solidified the win over Indiana. Rosen stressed the importance of defensive play, which has been lacking of late, but was evident this weekend as the Wolverines held the Hoosiers to a hitting percentage of just .121 with 59 kills and eight blocks.
After starting the season 18-2, the Wolverines lost four of their last seven before this weekend, including being swept in Bloomington.
"We didn’t just lose at their place," Rosen said. "We got beat up. So it was nice to come back and return the favor a little bit."
Fundamentals powered the Wolverines to revenge. After losing to Iowa and Minnesota last week, Rosen stressed perfecting the basics during practice and it certainly paid of this week.
“We just played Michigan volleyball,” Zimmerman said. “We came in this whole week in practice and worked really hard to reestablish who Michigan volleyball is and what makes us get wins.”
With just two games left before the NCAA Tournament, the weekend sweep provides a slumping Wolverine team with a little momentum.
“It’s the point of the season where you see the end result, Rosen said. “The NCAA Tournament is a tangible thing right there and we want to go far in that. So they kind of got a little excitement going and little momentum and hopefully we can carry that forward and keep playing for a while.”
