Following Wednesday's 6-0 victory over Western Michigan, the senior confirmed that he had removed himself from the Wolverines’ lineup indefinitely, pending an MRI of his right shoulder on Monday May 11.
“It’s sad because he’s given us his heart and soul,” said Michigan baseball coach Rich Maloney. “He played through so much pain this year, and then finally, he just couldn’t go anymore.”
The original injury occurred during the Wolverines’ series with IPFW in late March, shortly before the start of the Big Ten conference schedule for Michigan.
“I dove and did something to it,” Cislo said. “It didn’t feel quite right. Since then, it’s gotten progressively worse.”
Prior to the IPFW series, the Wolverines’ star second baseman was batting .361, but following the grievous dive Cislo’s batting average dropped to .295. From game to game, his shoulder pain increased and, as a result, batting became more troublesome. Cislo's low came during the Indiana series, April 24-26, where he went 0-for-13.
Before the shoulder injury, Cislo had recorded 26 hits and 13 RBI, but in the 26 games since then he has only registered 18 hits and 6 RBI.
Maloney described the Novi, Mich. native as a “warrior” and “quiet rock" who is still suited up for the Western Michigan series despite the severe pain his shoulder has caused him.
Cislo has seen action in 199 games while making 159 starts in his four years on the team. He has also racked up a number of accolades while wearing the maize and blue, including being named All-Big Ten Conference and All-Big Ten Tournament.
The Wolverines await Monday’s results to know whether or not they will have Cislo back for their possible Big Ten Tournament run or whether he will have to contribute from the dugout.
“He battled like the champion he is,” Maloney said.
