The Athletic Department’s search to replace the women’s golf program’s most successful coach has come to a close.

Cheryl Stacy, an assistant coach who spent the last four years with the Wolverines, was hired Friday to replace Kathy Teichert and take the reins of a program that finished seventh in the Big Ten last season.

"We are thrilled to name Cheryl Stacy as the new head coach of our women's golf program," athletic director Bill Martin said. "We're excited to watch as Cheryl takes our program to new heights on both the conference and national levels."

During Teichert’s 16-year tenure, Michigan earned 24 team titles while 11 players accounted for 19 individual championships.

And following her resignation on June 25, Martin and the rest of the athletic department turned to Stacy, whose coaching experience is limited to her last four years as an assistant with the Michigan staff.

Her experience with the Big Ten conference, however, is well versed.

As a collegiate golfer for Ohio State, Stacy was a two-time All-American and helped guide Ohio State to three straight Big Ten Championships.

Stacy also experienced success on multiple professional tours, including a trip to the 1991 U.S. Women’s Open.

Those brushes with success may be the spark the Wolverines need to accomplish what Teichert never could — a Big Ten Championship.
