The No. 14 Michigan men's tennis team came into this weekend’s ITA Tournament Kick-Off with two simple objectives: start strong and win the doubles point, and finish strong in the individual matches.

Even though the Wolverines didn't win the doubles point yesterday against Virginia Commonwealth, the squad regrouped in time to take every singles match from the Rams and come away with a 5-1 victory.

Michigan's win over Virginia Commonwealth clinched the ITA Regional Championship and gave the Wolverines a berth to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago on Feb. 13-16.

Michigan defeated No. 25 California 5-2 on the first day of action.

Senior Andrew Mazlin stole the show and achieved a career milestone in just two matches. He won his singles and doubles matches, which helped him lock up his 50th career victory in singles as well as his 50th career victory in doubles.

“His teammates have a lot of respect for him,” said Berque. “He is a clutch player and set the tone for us this weekend."

Going into the Virginia Commonwealth match yesterday, Berque cautioned his team to avoid a let down coming off the big win against California.

Despite the warning, the Wolverines found themselves down after losing the doubles point.

Freshman Drew Daniel, who was instrumental in singles play, wasn't content with his doubles match. Daniel and sophomore Chris Madden lost 8-2.

“It was disappointing, but you have to let it go," Daniel said. "It's only one point, and you just have to take care of business on your court (in singles).”

The Wolverines orchestrated a dominant comeback and ended up taking every singles match to seal the win.

Daniel provided the match-clinching point for the second straight day.

“It’s great being able to finish it off, having the entire team cheering for you," Daniel said. "I feel I can outlast any opponent. The longer the match lasts, the better chance I have to win it.”

Sophomore Jason Jung also had a great weekend, winning both of his matches at No. 1 singles.

After this weekend's success, the Wolverines will look to prove themselves on the national stage in the ITA National Championship.
