Wolverines upset No. 16 Texas despite failing to qualify for Women's ITA Indoor Championships

Michigan senior Chisako Sugiyama could do nothing wrong this weekend: two days, two matches and two wins over nationally ranked opponents.

“She played a high level of tennis, for sure,” Michigan women's tennis coach Ronnie Bernstein said. “She stuck with the game plan.”

Sugiyama and the rest of the Wolverine's traveled to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Va., last weekend to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend Opener.

Sugiyama certainly made sure the trip was well worth her time.

Sugiyama’s straight-set victories over No. 47 Sanaz Marand of North Carolina on Saturday, and another the next morning over No. 60 Vanja Corovic of Texas — didn't guarantee the 19th-ranked Wolverines a successful journey.

Michigan suffered a 5-2 heart-breaking loss to No. 18 North Carolina, which forced the Wolverines out of contention for the ITA Indoor Championship.

“We are definitely disappointed," Sugiyama said. "We are disappointed because their level is close to ours and our ranking is close to ours."

The Wolverines failed to secure their first doubles point this season and posted just two wins, at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, against the talented Tar Heels.

On Sunday, Michigan came out looking like a completely different team when it faced Texas.

The Wolverines jumped out to take an early lead with victories by the top two doubles teams to secure the point.

“It’s a big advantage (to win the doubles point)," Sugiyama said. "It’s only one point, but in reality it can make it or break (the match). We don’t have to worry any more about getting four singles.”

Despite Sugiyama's impressive individual performance in singles play and the Wolverines' upset of the Longhorns, Michigan left Virginia without its ultimate goal — the invitation to the ITA Indoor Championships.
