The last time Wolverine coach Red Berenson was a part of a six-game winning streak against Michigan State, Berenson was a senior at Michigan.

But not even in 1962 did the Wolverines beat the Spartans five times in a season, which Michigan did last night with a 5-3 victory.
In the win, however, the Wolverines may have lost a key part of their defense to injury. Junior Defenseman Steve Kampfer suffered an undisclosed injury after colliding with a Michigan State skater and falling into the boards late in the third period. Berenson would not comment on the situation, but Kampfer was seen leaving Yost on a stretcher.
At the very start of the first period, Michigan came out flying.
Thirty-six seconds into the game, sophomore center Matt Rust continued the Wolverines’ scoring onslaught from Friday night’s three-goal third period. After a Michigan State shot went just wide, bouncing off the outside of the net, the second line pushed the puck up the ice. Rust went backhand to forehand as he skated from the left to right crease, beating Spartan goalie Drew Palmisano glove side. Michigan State captain Jeff Lerg didn’t start between the pipes after surrendering six goals Friday.
And before reaching the halfway mark of the period, Michigan added another tally. Kampfer skated the puck up, centering it to sophomore center Louie Caporusso who quickly found senior forward Travis Turnbull on the right. Turnbull wristed a shot high glove side to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead before Michigan State had even registered a shot on goal.
As the period neared the three-minute mark, the Spartans threatened with their first odd-man rush of the game, a three-on-two against Michigan defensemen Chris Summers and Brandon Burlon. A Michigan State forward ended up with great scoring chance, one-on-one with sophomore goalie Bryan Hogan, but botched the opportunity.
A small scuffle broke out in front of the Wolverine goal once play stopped, putting Michigan on the penalty kill. But once the Spartan man-advantage expired, the Wolverines went on the power play with a holding call against the Spartans with 45 seconds remaining.
And 13 seconds into the man advantage, Burlon sent a blistering slapshot top left shelf from just inside the blue line for his fourth goal of the year. The score ended a 0-for-17 Michigan scoreless streak on the power play.
But less than three minutes into the second, the Spartans made the seemingly insurmountable 3-0 Michigan lead look very fragile very quickly with two lamp-lighters within 25 seconds of each other.
On the first score, Spartan senior forward Matt Schepke beat Kampfer on a nice stop-and-go move with the defenseman trailing from behind, punching it into the top right corner from the left circle.
Then, off the ensuing faceoff, Michigan State left-winger Andrew Rowe registered his fifth goal of the season after receiving a nice centering pass to the slot. What was a three-goal lead going into the break quickly dissolved as the Spartan’s netminder regained his composure, stopping all of Michigan’s 16 second-period shots.
At the start of the third the Wolverines responded quickly. Twelve seconds into the period, Rust found sophomore forward Carl Hagelin on the left wing, who snuck the puck by Palmisano from a very difficult angle as he skated past the goal line.
But once again, the Spartans sliced Michigan’s lead to one a minute later.
Turnbull turned the puck over while trying to clear it from the zone, and Michigan State freshman forward Adam Henderson slung a wrister back on goal from the high slot, finding the top right corner. The score, the Spartans’ third, matched their highest offensive output against the Wolverines this year.
Nearly halfway through the third, the back-and-forth scoring continued. Summers sent a wrister from just inside the right blue line past Palmisano’s high glove side to give Michigan a two-goal lead, which it would not relinquish.
